4×5 or 120?
As I pack for my upcoming trip to Korea, I am trying to decide what gear to take with me. On my last trip in 2006 to Korea, I shot 35mm and 645, both B&W and color. I’m not sure I’ve learned my lesson… I’m thinking about two formats again…
Initially I thought that I’d simply take my 4×5, one lens and my digital point and shoot. Recently I have been shooting primarily with 4×5 and digital. On my trip to Singapore in 2008 I shot 4×5 chromes alongside digital. For the Auburn/Lewiston project I was shooting 4×5 B&W exclusively. In fact, I got my current 4×5 field camera so that I would have a packable 4×5 for travel. This seemed like a good plan until I began to worry about whether or not I would have the freedom to work slowly with the view camera since I would have travel companions. (Unlike the trip to Singapore, I’ll be traveling with Ji and often her mother and sister as well. No day long wanders through the city alone with the sole purpose of looking for photographs.) Shooting with the view camera takes a fairly slow approach, ten to twenty minutes for each frame. It also requires I pack a lot of big, awkward and heavy things: holders and a tripod in particular.
A couple days ago I got the idea that maybe my Fuji 645, which I’d brought on my first trip, could substitute for the 4×5. But why have a 4×5 for travel then? What did I buy the damn thing for? Maybe I could bring my 4×5 but with the 6×9 roll back rather than 4×5 holders to lighten the load. Or maybe the 4×5 with 6×9 roll film back and the Fuji since it’s all the same film…
Oh boy.
GRDII, definitely.
Chamonix, maybe.
Fuji G645, maybe.
Everything, I hope not.
I’m buying film in a couple of hours, I’ll have to decide pretty soon.
***Update***
I went with the Fuji and the Ricoh plus the lightweight tripd. Small and compact won out. All photos posted during the trip will be from the Ricoh because I’m not processing film until I get back stateside.
